Slovenian identity was shaped and preserved by the nation’s culture. A large part of our culture are old slavic believes and slavic mythology, which have been transferred to modern times. Old Slavic beliefs are extremely complex. Each religion destroyed the monuments and foundations of the previous one, and the period of Christianization, which brought Christianity, managed to transfer some pagan beliefs in a very sophisticated way both in religion and in everyday life.

Clothing and accessories are named after the slavic gods or characters from mythology that our Old Slavic ancestors worshiped. And just as the gods were important to our ancestors, so were the symbols that had magical and protective meanings. They were never random and connected man with nature. People wore the symbols in places where contact with another person was the most common – wrists, neck, head, shoulders and where they had contact with the ground – feet.

Kresnik is one of the most important slavic gods. He is known only in the Slovenian and northern Croatian region. Associated with one of the most important slavic holidays – midsummer. The origin of the name comes from the word »kresiti«, which in Slovenian means »to hit hard«. Kresnik is a reflection of the summer solstice period. His role changed over time and the development of various beliefs and was also preserved in Christianity, where God Kresnik becomes St. John the Baptist.
In Slavic mythology, Jarilo is the god of spring and a wolf shepherd. He is also the god of vegetation, and his power is rebirth – he keeps dying and being reborn again and again. According to mythology, Jarilo was the son of Perun, born at Christmas time, and then kidnapped by the wolf lord Veles and made into a wolf shepherd as his servant.
Črt has positive and negative connotations in old slavic mythology. After the Christianization, he was equated with a demon. He is also referred to as the god of the underworld. He was a knower – he always knew and saw everything that was happening in the clouds, on earth and in the underworld. Črt is always truthful and honest.

In Slavic mythology, Živa is the godess of water and life, fertility and love, and the protector of women and children. In old records, she always appears in connection with the time of harvest.
Zarja is the Slavic goddess of the universe. There are three Zarja’s- The Morning Zarja (Dawn) opened the gates of heaven as her father Sun made his daily journey across the sky. Evening Zarja closed the door when the Sun finished his journey. In the hands of the Midnight Zarja, the Sun dies and is reborn in the morning.
Triglav is a Slavic god with three heads. He is the lord of air, earth and water. The number three was and still is considered a magical number in many religions, and Triglav is no different. Because he has three heads, he sees everything!
