Who are Krivopetnice?

In folklore, Krivopetnice are depicted as beautiful, yet wild and mysterious women with long golden hair and a unique physical trait – their heels are said to be turned backward, allowing them to confuse pursuers and erase their tracks. They live in deep forests, near waters, far from human eyes, where they dance, sing, and protect nature.

In tales, they appear as guardians of women's secrets, independence, and inner strength. Their image is not only mystical but also archetypal – embodying free, independent female energy connected to the earth and the spiritual world. In the Slovenian cultural space, they are a symbol of thresholds, transformation, and a reminder that the balance between humanity and nature is not to be taken for granted. However, when this balance is disrupted, they can also become dangerous.
