“Birds”: A Reflection of Freedom and Heritage
The Birds collection is something deeply personal to me. It was born out of an inner need for freedom – freedom of creation, freedom of movement, and the freedom to be who you are. The birds I depict are not just aesthetic motifs. They are symbols of spiritual ascent, inner strength, and a timeless connection to nature. Their flight reminds me of the ability to transcend boundaries – both external ones and those we carry within ourselves.

In Slovenian folklore, birds hold a special place. They are messengers of souls, guardians of the home, and connectors between the earthly and the divine. In folk tales, they accompany heroines on their journey of transformation; in folk poetry, they symbolise longing, love, and independence. We find them in rituals, fairy tales, and most notably, in embroidery – always as something light yet powerful.
The patterns on the garments are designed as bird silhouettes, not drawn with feathers but filled with designs inspired by traditional Slovenian embroidery. These pixel-like patterns echo those found in embroidery and weaving charts, connecting the collection to the rich tradition of Slovenian textile design.
The garments are made from natural materials such as organic cotton, linen, and rayon. They are comfortable, lightweight, and gentle on the skin – emphasizing respect for nature and sustainable design. This reflects the values of the JKH identity brand, and I believe, also the values of the modern woman.
Birds is a collection born from the interweaving of stories of cultural heritage, the skilled hands of our foremothers, and the warmth of home. It is the story of Helena Vurnik – a great yet often overlooked artist who explored the deep ties between nature, culture, and spirituality. It is the story of a dota – a legacy we should not forget.
With this new collection, I aim to continue raising awareness about the importance of freedom, the respect for heritage, and sustainable design.
The motifs used – such as the tree of life, carnations, flowers, and hearts – are more than mere decoration. They are carriers of meaning:
The tree of life speaks of the cycle of existence, the connection between generations, and natural harmony; the carnation, often seen in embroidery from the Gorenjska and Dolenjska regions, expresses love, respect, and the strength of home; while flowers and hearts convey wishes for happiness, peace, and warmth.
The garments are made from natural materials – organic cotton, linen, and rayon – that breathe with us and with nature. Each piece is designed with sustainability in mind, honouring the earth and the comfort of the modern woman who wants to stay true to herself and her values.

Oda svobodi, koreninam in lepoti
So simbol duhovnega vzpona, notranje moči in brezčasne povezanosti z naravo. V slovenski folklori imajo ptice posebno mesto.
Z novo kolekcijo želim še naprej spodbujati zavest o pomenu svobode, spoštovanju dediščine in trajnostnega oblikovanja.
