Zeleni Jurij: The Mythological Hero

Spring is in full swing, and with it comes "Zeleni Jurij" (Green George).

Jurjevo is an important folk holiday celebrated on April 23rd or 24th. Zeleni Jurij is a mythological hero who brings spring, luck, and abundance. Today, the celebration is most vibrant in the Bela krajina region. Before the festivities begin, one of the villagers is dressed in greenery, the boys carry a decorated birch tree (mlaj), and the girls are adorned with flowers.

During the celebration, they sing a traditional folk song:

"Past has passed the colorful Easter, arrived has arrived Green George. He brought, he brought, a span-long grass, a cubit-long sprout. Give to him, give to him! Give gifts to George! Give him a 'pogača' cake, so his leg may dance! Give him wine, so he won't be cold! Give him a shoulder of meat, so he won't scold you! Give him bread, so the flies won't bother him! Give him rye, to be toasted at home! Give him eggs, so the rabbit won't get him! Give him buckwheat, so he finds his way home! Give him grain, to be fattened at home! Give him a penny, so he will come again!"

And if the doors remained closed: "Hey, hey, hey! Will there be something soon?"
